COLLUN-CO
Red Stag Hunting in NEUQUÉN, ARGENTINA
This 62,000 acre ranch is a Patagonian icon, located in the Junin de los Andes area that stretches from the high desert foothills of the Andes on the east to the jagged mountains on the west bordering Lanin National Park, near the border with Chile. This is the very property where Red Deer from eastern Europe, were first introduced to Patagonia more than a 100 years ago. The stags in this region are a 100% wild, free roaming, game that wanders through their natural migrations as they did in the beginning of the century. Estancia Collun-Co was established in 1909 by Mr. Robert Hohmann, a German immigrant, when he acquired the land. The property has remained in the family since then. The main ranch house was built in 1912 and then fully refurbished and modernized some years ago. Meanwhile the hunting lodge is also situated at the ranch main headquarters.
A beautiful and cozy wooden English-style house that is in the middle of the estancia, with amazing views of the mountains. Like all our other properties, we follow a strict herd management here, harvesting only mature old Stags that are at the peak past peak in their reproductive life. We stalk these big mountain deer that live in the remote and high cordillera and come down into the ranch looking for hinds during the rut.
THE HUNTING
At Estancia Collun-Co, as with all our other big game hunting destinations, we aim to provide exceptional experiences in the most beautiful and pristine areas of South America. Due to stringent herd management practices, we limit the harvest to a very exclusive number of trophy Stags each season, adding to the unique appeal of this ranch.
All guiding is conducted on a 1x1 basis, unless guests request otherwise. The hunting team, consisting of the hunter and guide, utilizes the well-established ranch road system with 4WD trucks to reach the designated hunting area for the day. Horses may also be employed if necessary, especially for accessing the more remote and elevated parts of the ranch. Travel times can range from 15 minutes to 1 hour. The classic spot-and-stalk method is the predominant hunting style here. Depending on the season, bowhunters may also spend time patiently waiting near wallows and watering areas.
After a morning stalk, guests return to the lodge for lunch and have the option of a midday nap if desired. Each day, the hunting team returns to the hills in the mid-afternoon for the evening hunt, continuing until dark with enough light to safely descend from the mountain. On occasions when staying out all day, packed lunches are provided. In addition to Stag hunting, the area also boasts a thriving population of pure wild European boar, offering an exciting addition to the Red Deer Hunt.
